What To Do In Case of Rape

  • Please DO NOT shower
    We understand the urge to clean yourself, however important evidence is lost. If you shower kindly still go to hospital for treatment.
    Note: Do not eat or brush your teeth if oral sex took place, do not cut your nails especially if there was struggle during the ordeal, some DNA evidence could be found with the nails.
  • Kindly keep the clothes you were in and hand them in to the hospital.
    Clothes contain evidence that’s crucial to case. Keep them in a paper bag separately and hand them over.
  • Go to the nearest hospital that offers GBV facilities.
    For Nairobi:
    1. MSF Clinic Juja Road
    2. Kenyatta Hospital
    3. Mama Lucy
    4. Tumaini Clinic
    5. Tumaini center at Kibera south health center – 6. Amref
    7. Mater Hospital
    8. Coptic Hospital
    9. Nairobi Women Hospital
    10. All County Council Level 2 and above hospitals Outside Nairobi;
    Visit any Government Hospitals
    Kindly note that Post Rape Care in GBV facilities is free.
  • In the GBV centers;
    As long as you have been treated before the 72 hour windows you will be tested for;
    1. HIV
    2. STDs
    3. Pregnancy for females
  • You will receive the following medications;
    1. PEP for one month after exposure if you are within the one-month window
    2. STI prophylaxis if exposed
    3. Emergency contraception for females
    4. Hepatitis B injection administered twice
  • Trauma counseling is available in the GBV centers.
    The trauma of being raped or sexually assaulted can be shattering, leaving you feeling scared, ashamed, and alone or plagued by nightmares, flashbacks, and other unpleasant memories.
    The world doesn’t feel like a safe place anymore
    You no longer trust others
    You don’t even trust yourself
    You may question your judgment, your self-worth, and even your sanity
    You may blame yourself for what happened or believe that you’re ‘’dirty’’ or ‘’damaged goods’’
    Relationship feels dangerous, intimacy impossible
    And on top of that, like many rape survivors, you may struggle with PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

It’s important to remember that what you’re experiencing is a normal reaction to trauma. Your feelings of helplessness, shame, defectiveness, and self-blame are symptoms, not reality.

No matter how difficult it may seem, with thee tips and techniques, you can come to terms with what happened, regain your sense of safety and trust, and learn to heal and move on with your life.
