A form 1 girl at Sena Mixed Secondary is alleged to have been brutally murdered after being defiled in Kitawi village, Mfangano East location, Homabay County. Jane Onyege was attacked on the night of 25/09/2020 by the perpetrator who waited until her fisherman father had left for his usual night fishing trips. She was at home at around 10pm with her 8 and 6-year-old sibling when the murderer knocked pretending to be looking for his fishing net that was supposedly left behind the girl’s father.
As soon as they opened the door, the man pounced on her and pinned her to the wall before threatening the rest with their lives if they dare scream. He then forcefully dragged Jane outside to the unknown only to return in the dead of the night. One of the siblings says he dragged Jane and placed her on their sleeping mat. He then instructed them not to wake her up because she was very tired.
Jane didn’t prepare breakfast early as usual and her siblings got suspicious when she didn’t respond when they tried waking her up. The eldest ran all the way to the nearest home to call a neighbor who upon checking raised alarm.
Her lifeless body had strangle marks on the neck and her soiled pants had been placed as a pillow. Police from Sena Police Station took the body as the family plan for burial. The suspect is still at large.
These heart-breaking cases continue, we must never normalize the conversations around rape and molestation. We must have conversations with our children, in our communities and family at large, on how together we can end the menace if sexual violence.
